SIÓFOK and the Lake Balaton
The surroundings of Siófok had already been inhabited in the neolithic period and later, in Roman times. Its main role was to defend military and commercial roads in the Southern Transdanubian region.
Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe. After the introduction of steam boating and railway traffic the city was re-born as a holiday resort. The soggy and shrubby land was backfilled with earth, major hotels were constructed at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. Swimming and tennis competitions were held and the place became a popular spa for artists, actors and the upper-middle class of Budapest.
Although the settlement was badly damaged in World War II, Siófok remained a major holiday centre. The mild water and the shallow shore offer safe bathing to holiday-makers. Tourism rapidly developed in 1960s when the construction of the hotel line started. Today Siófok is an important touristic centre, “the capital of the Lake Balaton ”. The city pampers visitors with flowers, parks, statues and Hungarian hospitality.
